General Description

Sewerage Catchment:

  • Penguin Head outfall (constructed in 1985) is the discharge point for the Culburra STP, which services the communities of Culburra, Crookhaven Heads, Orient Point and Greenwell Point.

Sewage Treatment:

  • Penguin Head outfall uses an IEAAS treatment process with tertiary ponds.

Outfall:

  • Effluent from Culburra STP travels through a rising main to Penguin Head and then through a gravity main to the seaward end of the headland. The discharge pipe is oriented at an angle of approximately 25° down from the horizontal at the seaward end. The outlet is approximately 1.7m below mean sea level (AHD). The original rock protection constructed at the outlet has been partially removed by wave action although the pipe itself is still in place and heavily encrusted with marine growth (MHL769 1997).
